ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION IN HOSPITALS: FROM SUPPORTING INFECTION CONTROL TO OPTIMIZING OPERATIONS

Oct.21.2026

From the Vietnam Infection Control Conference 2026 to the Broader Story of Healthcare Technology Transformation

The 3rd Scientific Conference of the Vietnam Infection Control Society (VNICS) 2026 took place on October 2–3, 2026, in Da Lat under the theme “Transforming Healthcare through Excellent Infection Control.” The conference brought together nearly 600 delegates and featured 93 scientific presentations covering topics ranging from instrument processing and infection surveillance to environmental control, digital transformation and the application of artificial intelligence in infection control and CSSD.

Notably, discussions around technology, process standardization, quality management and digital transformation highlighted how infection control is increasingly connected to the modernization of healthcare facilities. The conference also created a space connecting expertise – technology – practical solutions, raising a broader question: how can technology be integrated into hospital workflows to support safer, more consistent and more efficient operations?

How Technology Is Changing Hospital Operations

Artificial intelligence, digital data, robotics and automation are gradually becoming part of healthcare technology transformation. Each technology has a different role, but they share a common objective: helping people perform tasks with greater accuracy, consistency and efficiency.

In clinical practice, surgical robotics is one example of how technology is being integrated into procedures that require a high level of precision. In supporting activities, robots can be applied to environmental cleaning, disinfection, internal transportation, reception and patient guidance. In addition, specialized automation systems can be integrated into repetitive processes or activities that require a high level of control.

These applications differ in function, but they all reflect the same trend: technology is being integrated more deeply into the actual processes of healthcare facilities.

How Robots Can Support Different Areas of Hospital Operations

Not every robotic application in a hospital directly serves infection control. However, when selected for the right needs, robots can support a wide range of activities, from environmental management and logistics to services and operational support.

For PAN Robotics, healthcare robotics solutions are developed across several areas, including hospital cleaning robots, disinfection robots, medical transportation robots, and reception and patient guidance robots. Each category addresses a different challenge while helping reduce repetitive tasks and improve consistency in daily activities.

Cleaning and Disinfection Robots – Supporting Environmental Control

This is the application area most directly connected to environmental control requirements in hospitals. PAN Robotics provides automated cleaning solutions such as PAN Robotics RSS1 and RSS5, together with Nilfisk autonomous cleaning solutions including SC25, SC50, SC60 and VP25, suitable for different facility sizes and cleaning environments.

Automating part of the cleaning process helps maintain consistent cleaning schedules, reduce reliance on manual operations and support more standardized cleaning performance in high-traffic areas.

In addition, the AX-4112 disinfection robot from PAN Robotics uses ultrasonic mist spraying and is capable of autonomous movement, navigation and task execution along predefined routes. This technology can support healthcare facilities in strengthening environmental control in areas where disinfection is appropriate.

Medical Transportation Robots – Automating Internal Logistics

Within hospitals, the transportation of medicines, supplies, laboratory samples and other materials between different areas is a continuous activity. PAN Robotics provides automated transportation robots for healthcare environments, helping automate part of the movement of materials between departments and functional areas.

The value of these solutions goes beyond replacing manual transportation. They can also help organize internal delivery flows more consistently, reduce transportation time and minimize unnecessary contact during daily activities.

Reception and Patient Guidance Robots – Supporting Patient Experience

At reception areas, reception and guidance robots can provide information, direct patients to the appropriate areas and reduce the workload of front-desk staff. While this application does not directly serve infection control, it contributes to a more modern model of hospital activity and can enhance the patient experience within healthcare facilities.

From Technology to Supporting Infection Control

The key is not to introduce as many robots as possible into a hospital, but to identify the right tasks where technology can create practical value.

For infection control, this may include environmental cleaning, disinfection or reducing unnecessary contact in selected activities. For logistics, it may involve transporting medicines, laboratory samples and supplies. In reception areas, technology can support patient guidance and reduce the workload of staff.

Robots therefore do not replace an infection control system or the role of healthcare professionals. They are tools that can be integrated into workflows to help people perform tasks more consistently and with greater control.

Automation Should Start with Real Workflows

The value of robotics does not lie in how many robots a hospital owns, but in what practical problems the technology can help solve.

Every healthcare facility has different requirements in terms of scale, layout, patient volume, staffing and workflows. Therefore, automation should begin by identifying tasks that are repetitive, resource-intensive, precision-critical or require consistent control. Only then can the appropriate robots, automation systems or digital solutions be selected.

This is also how PAN Robotics approaches automation projects: from on-site assessment and needs identification to technology selection, integration and implementation, rather than simply supplying standalone equipment.

Toward More Modern Hospital Operations

Healthcare transformation is not a single technological change. It is a process of bringing together expertise, people, workflows and technology to create safer and more efficient healthcare environments.

From infection control, CSSD and environmental control to logistics, reception and other supporting activities, robotics and automation can become part of this transformation when selected and implemented according to real needs.

With its healthcare robotics portfolio and capabilities in consulting, integration and deployment of Robotics & Automation solutions, PAN Robotics aims to bring technology into the real needs of hospitals – from environmental control, disinfection and internal logistics to reception support and specialized automation activities.
